It would depend on the game. I hope that some sort of compression is used for the larger files...
Overall, yes, it is pointless, and yes, companies will do whatever they can to make more sales, even if it means pissing off the consumer.
The sad part is, they will probably never stop. It's business, and they're there to make money. The good part though, is that there will almost always be someone that breaks whatever is put out. People will always want things for cheaper, and you can't beat free... unless like, they give you money

I've been recently playing Sup Com 2, which has Steamworks support. However, it got my mind jogging another game that has Steamworks support is Torchlight, which has saved games on the "steam cloud".
Just a tidbit of info, the Steam Cloud is a centralized steam server that holds your settings (graphics, key mappings, audio settings). Thus, everytime you start the game and close the game, you 'sync' your settings with the cloud, and thus even on multiple PC's you can keep the same key mappings.
The Steam Cloud is an awesome tool when used properly. On games such as Modern Warfare 2, it even keeps you custom classes between computers. Same with Team Fortress 2 and your weapon selections...
The Difference is, Steam has an offline mode and multiplayer games. Also, Steam has a fair amount of support and multiple servers, and thus probably isn't vulnerable like ubisofts one was.
That said, some great alternatives to Steam are Impulse (It has Total Annihilation, holy shit why aren't you buying it RIGHT NOW)
Speaking of which, i need to play some TA....

I agree, the Steam cloud is VERY good. The ability to have your save games stored in the cloud while allowing for offline saves is very very useful.
If only ubisoft had taken the same approach... Pity they were just ***** who decided to **** stuff up instead of thinking of ways to make the gaming experience better.
